Losing Weight After Having A Child

Losing Weight After Having A Child

While glossy magazines show famous women who have recently given birth and look like they were never pregnant, the average women has a tougher time returning to her pre-pregnancy weight. It is common to gain more than 40 pounds during childbirth and this can be incredibly hard to lose. Women see themselves in the mirror and are horrified. Some embark on foolish crash diets while others simply give up and allow the weight to stay on. Losing the weight you put on after having a child is possible, it just requires patience, hard work and a plan of action.

Being Large Is Normal
Women are usually aghast at the sight of their bodies after giving birth because they still look pregnant. This is a natural phenomenon and occurs because the stomach is still enlarged. It takes a few weeks for the uterus to return to its normal size and anywhere from 10-20 pounds will be lost during this period as the body gradually removes the excess fluid remaining from the pregnancy. Therefore, it is important not to focus on what you look like after birth. Instead, think about how slim and sexy you were beforehand and imagine how wonderful it will be to get your old body back.

Slow Weight Loss
Patience is certainly a virtue and you cannot expect to lose dozens of pounds overnight. Extremely taxing exercise needs to be avoided for the first few weeks after childbirth in order to give your body time to fully recuperate. Interestingly, women who neglect to breastfeed their child are missing out on a simple weight loss opportunity. Did you know that breastfeeding takes up approximately 500 calories every single day? This equates to around one pound per week of weight loss. One problem with breastfeeding is that you cannot go on a diet because calorie restriction can lead to the creation of toxins which end up in your breast milk.

Jumping Hurdles
There are a dozen obstacles to weight loss after giving birth such as fatigue, lack of time, mood swings and guilt. Yes, new mums often feel guilty about taking any time off to exercise. However, by exercising, women will help improve their energy levels which in turn will help them be a better mother. Start off slowly with some simple exercises to get you back into the groove. For example, walk up and down the stairs or perform some bodyweight exercises (if you’re able) while the child is asleep. After a few weeks, you will be able to up your level of effort.

Exercise Ideas
It is important to strengthen your abdominal region after pregnancy. Try exercises such as ball crunches and pelvic tilts. Start jogging a few minutes a day, three times a week until you are able to handle more than 20 minutes at a time. If you are unable to jog, take up an online program such as Couch to 5K. It is a fact that weight training helps improve our metabolism which results in quicker fat loss. If you have the time, workout with weights 2-3 times a week.

The above are just some exercise ideas. Naturally, you should tailor your exercise regime to your schedule and level of fitness. Whatever method you use in order to lose weight after pregnancy, remember to start off gently, be consistent and keep a list of exercises you intend to do. You are far more likely to commit to exercise when it’s down in black and white.

Healthy Foods for Skin

Healthy Foods for Skin

Berries like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and plum have antioxidant properties. These antioxidants prevent skin damage and when skin cells are protected from damage and disintegration, they look youthful and younger for longer. These berries are delicious and easy to find in their seasons and are best to eat with yoghurt, cereals and a great on-the-go snack.

Spinach & Carrots

Carrots & spinach are excellent sources of vitamin A, which is a required nutrient for healthy skin. These vegetables suffer from a bad reputation of being not-so-yummy, but as we all know, mom is always right; you should eat these vegetables for a healthy body and skin. They also contain high levels of Vitamin A, which is required for developing and maintaining skin cells, and a deficiency of which, can cause dry skin. You can have them raw, in salads or cooked with omlettes and other dishes.

Green Tea

This drink contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps reduce inflammation, protect cell membranes and keep bacteria at bay. It has been proven to reduce the damage of sunburns and overexposure to ultraviolet light, which, in turn, reduces the risk of skin cancer. Green tea is also high in polyphenols, compounds that eliminates cancer causing free elements.

Almonds

Essential fatty acids found in nuts and seeds help to keep the skin soft and supple. Some studies also show that they can prevent severity of condition of skin diseases like rosacea and eczema. Almonds are amazingly healthy and full of Vitamin E which gives the skin that glowy look. Vitamin E also helps in repairing skin tissues and maintaining skin moisture. You can have them raw or mixed with salads and fruits.

Water

Last, but certainly not the least, is water. Good hydration is our skin’s best friend. Water in caffeinated sugary drinks, sodas, colas and juices doesn’t count though. Water intake should be from clean and pure source that rejuvenates the skin. Water both hydrates the skin and moves toxins out and nutrients in. Also, if you are properly hydrated, you sweat more which, in turn, helps keep your skin clean and clear.
By paying special attention to what you are feeding your body, you will see positive results in not only your health and the way you feel, but also the way you look. Beauty truly does come from within.

Indoor Gardening

Tips and Tricks for Indoor Gardening

There are many tips and tricks that you should follow when bringing plants into your home, some are common, like knowing how much to water the plant, to how much light it should get. Below you will find a list of some suggestions about caring for your indoor garden.

1.Lighting for the plant. Now this is the first thing that you should consider when starting your inside garden, how much light does the plant need? This is important because most houses wouldn't have enough light to handle a plant that needs a lot of light. So, the lighting in your house becomes essential even before you start your inside garden or bringing any plant into your house, because the amount of light in your house will determine what types of plants would grow there. So make sure to consider this before bringing any plant into your house. You should select plants that require medium to low light, unless you plan on supplying the plant with artificial lighting. Some plants that are medium to low light would be a Boston fern, Philodendrons, etc. Here are a few other tips regarding lighting in the house:

During the summer months put the plants outside, this will usually boost up the plant and give it a new spurt of energy

Because a plant will turn to the light, you should rotate the plant, this will promote an upright growth.

There are a few ways you can tell if your plant is getting enough light or not.  If it isn't getting enough light, it usually will have small leaves, thin stems, and the color of the plant will be lighter than usual.

Artificial lighting, with a fluorescent lamp, etc, can be used to supplement a house with limited natural lighting.

Condition your plants when you buy them. You have to do this because the place where you buy the plant will usually have more lighting than your home and the plant can go into a shock of sorts and lose it's foliage. Now to condition your plant, make sure you give it the maximum amount of light your house has, and then gradually reduce the amount of light to be equal to the spot where you want the plant to end up.

   2.Watering Plants:

Not every plant has the same needs when it comes to watering, but there are some basic rules you should follow:

Wet the soil thoroughly, and the water should be able to drain out of the bottom of the pot. How much you water, and how often purely depends on the type of plant that you are dealing with, so read the seeds or ask the person selling you the plant, how much water does this plant require.

Now, don't over water, that's probably what kills most plants. If you have too wet of a soil constantly it will lead to problems with the roots. You'll notice that the leaves will become yellow, that's because there is not enough oxygen in the soil because it is too wet.

When watering the plants, try to use water that is the same temperature as the room. This will insure that the plant doesn't have any shock from too cold or hot water.

   3.Temperature:

As with watering, different plants will thrive under different conditions, one of which is the temperature. As a general rule temperatures between 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, during the day and 10-15 degrees cooler at night. Now this will not cover all plants, but this is the range for most of the house plants. Here are a few more tips to follow:

The temperature can go up or down by 10 degrees from the ranges above, it will not kill the plant.

Rapid changes in temperature, either colder or hotter, can cause damage to your plant.

If a plant is grown at a hotter temperature than is needed, it will be small, weak. If it is grown in a too cool temperature the leaves will have a yellowish look and will fall off.

   4.Pots and Containers:

Make sure that you have a pot that can adequately allow the water to drain out of it. Also, before putting a plant in a pot you have used for another plant, make sure you clean it out. Just incase some disease that may effect the next plant.

   5.Humidity:

The level of moisture in the air can also effect how a plant grows. Low humidity, in most plants, not all, will cause dry leaves and curling. Increase the humidity of the room with a humidifier, especially during winter when the heat is on and the humidity drops. You could also spray the leaves with water, but do it in the morning, if done overnight the leaves can rot.

   6.Fertilizing:

Once again, this is one of those tips that is based purely on the type of plant that you have, different plants need different levels. Other factors include, how fast do you want the plant to grow, how much sunlight there is, how many times you water it, etc. As a general rule, for plants that are growing very quickly, you should fertilize every 2 to 3 months, but for dormant plants, you shouldn't fertilize at all. Since these are indoor plants, that receive less sun than normal, you really don't have to fertilize them too often. If you see burned or dried leaves, you can have a pretty good guess that the plant has been over fertilized.
